Why do public places feel like nobody’s places?

A broken bench, a dark lamp, and the sentence we all say: “Someone should do something.”

Why do public places feel like nobody’s places?
Tata Frikythinking out loud…
  1. Tuesday
  2. Tata FrikyThe bench at the little park is still broken.
  3. Someone tied ribbon around it. It looks like the bench is celebrating its own resignation 💀
  4. KossiThe other bench works.
  5. Tata FrikySix people and a stroller are using it.
  6. KossiOkay, when you put it that way...
  7. NadiaIs the lamp next to it still out?
  8. Tata FrikyYes. By day we say “it's just a bench.” At night the whole place empties.
  9. Tata Friky
  10. KossiThe city should maintain it.
  11. Tata FrikyYes. But a neighbour reported the light a month ago. Nobody knows what happened.
  12. NadiaDoes she have the report reference?
  13. Tata FrikyShe thinks so. I'll ask.
  14. What bothers me is “it's public, so nobody looks after it.”
  15. KossiThat's often how it feels.
  16. Tata FrikyMe too. I've walked around that bench for weeks without even asking who manages the park.
  17. NadiaPeople use it though. Children, vendors taking a break, older neighbours...
  18. KossiSo “public” means it belongs to everyone?
  19. Tata FrikyDepends what you mean. For repairs, someone has a specific duty. For deciding what works, the people who use it should matter.
  20. NadiaOh yes. Otherwise they could put a new bench in full sun and proudly announce “problem solved.”
  21. Tata FrikyExactly. A mother told me the path doesn't fit her stroller either. I hadn't noticed.
  22. KossiBecause you don't have a stroller.
  23. Tata FrikyThank you, detective.
  24. NadiaAnd a broken bench isn't a do-it-yourself repair project. Someone could get hurt.
  25. Tata FrikyRight. We can make the danger visible, ask for a repair and follow up. The repair needs trained people.
  26. KossiWhat if it takes months?
  27. Tata FrikyI don't know. Follow up together? Go to a neighbourhood meeting? I'd like to know what's worked elsewhere.
  28. NadiaAnd ask the people using the park. The bench might be their third priority.
  29. Tata FrikyExactly. We're talking about THIS bench, but maybe there's a bigger story in that place.

What does your neighbourhood need most?

  32. Which public place near you would you like to get back? And who really decides what happens to it?

How did this land?

Your turn

Which shared place near you feels neglected, and who should be in the conversation about it?

Tata Friky

I'll ask the neighbour what happened to her report.
